Getting started
Food Devils: lost your first expedition?
You do not need to restart your Food Devils save just because the first expedition failed. The developer says the opening is extremely difficult with only two human adventurers, but it can be won. The story continues whether you win or lose.
Return to the restaurant and work on the next expedition. Losing an expedition and losing all permanent progress are different things.

A difficult opening, not a compulsory defeat
The October Demo’s first expedition gives you a smaller human team than the normal party limit. That makes both combat and supporting the Devil harder. A loss on this outing does not show that you chose the wrong save, and winning it is not required to reach the next story scenes.
- Let the expedition result and following story sequence finish.
- Continue into the restaurant rather than starting a new game to repeat the opening.
- Use the next visit to plan your party, available food and departure options.
If you lose later expeditions too, identify what ended them. An expired round counter needs a different response from a Devil with no Calories or a badly weakened human team.
Separate long-term progress from the run’s build
| What you are checking | How to think about it |
|---|---|
| Story, Devil relationships and progression | These form the continuing cast and meta-progression between expeditions. |
| Restaurant development, unlocked recipes and options | Treat these as your longer-term preparation tools, separate from the skills found during one outing. |
| Temporary expedition skills | A run-specific build is not a permanent loadout. Losing those skills is different from erasing the restaurant or story. |
| Ingredients or currency after a failure | Check the result and restaurant inventory. The sources used here do not establish a fixed percentage you always keep. |
Permadeath is a separate decision
Human adventurers can die permanently when Permadeath is enabled. The developer’s October interview says the option can be changed during a playthrough. Choose it for the stakes you want on future expeditions.
Turning Permadeath off is not a documented way to resurrect someone who has already died. Do not discard your existing save on the assumption that the setting will reverse a past death, or that repeated summons are guaranteed to restore the same adventurer.
The Devils are the persistent story cast; that does not mean every human or every temporary skill is protected after a loss.
Choose your next check by the reason you lost
- The round counter ran out: consider Forgiving Round Limits before your next trip.
- The Devil could not use the action you needed: check the selected Master Rule’s Calorie trigger.
- You are back with very few ingredients: inspect what you actually returned with. A player reported having only Free Tea after a poor run; no guaranteed ingredient-recovery recipe or recruitment result is established here.
- An older save will not load in the new Demo: use the June/October save distinction; that is a version issue, not an expedition result.
You can continue when…
The restaurant or next story scene is available in your existing save, you know which part of your last build was temporary, and you have chosen one concrete adjustment for the next outing. A perfect opening clear is not the completion condition for this decision.
